The native range of this species is Tropical & Subtropical America, W. & W. Central Tropical Africa. It is a climbing perennial or herbaceous phanerophyt and grows primarily in the seasonally dry tropical biome. It is used as a medicine, has environmental uses and for food.

Distribution
Biogeografic region: Andean, Caribbean, Orinoquia, Pacific. Elevation range: 0–2000 m a.s.l. Native to Colombia. Colombian departments: Antioquia, Arauca, Atlántico, Bolívar, Caldas, Casanare, Cauca, Cesar, Chocó, Córdoba, Cundinamarca, Huila, Magdalena, Meta, Norte de Santander, Putumayo, San Andrés y Providencia, Santander, Tolima, Valle del Cauca.
