Morphology General Habit
Glabrous succulent perennial herb, with a large fleshy rootstock; stems numerous, dark green, branching mostly from the base to form a domed cushion to 60 cm. in diameter, erect or decumbent to 30 cm. long, 1–2 cm. thick, tessellated with ± prominent upward-pointing tubercles, 3–10 × 5–8 mm. at the base, bearing the leaves at the apices 1–4 mm. from the axils, in 5 or 8 tightly to ± loosely spiralled series.

Leaves very fleshy, obovate to oblanceolate, to 5 × 1.5 cm., apex acute, apiculate, margin entire or minutely crenulate, lamina dark green, often marbled with purple; stipules rarely evident as minute prickles on young growth around the calloused leaf-scar.

Cymes on peduncles to 1.5 cm. long, 1-forked, arising in the axils of the tubercles; bract-cup distinctly longer than the involucre, ± 7 × 6 mm., deeply notched between acute apices and scarcely prominent midribs, greenish white flushed with pink.

Cyathia ± 5.5 × 4.5 mm., with cup-shaped involucres; glandular rim 2.5 mm. high, edged with dull red; lobes rounded, ± 1.2 × 1.2 mm.
