Flowers sessile or shortly stalked in axils of branches, solitary; calyx lobes 5, triangular- lanceolate, equal, green outside, white inside 6–7 mm in flower, somewhat longer in fruit; staminodes absent; stamens 7–12 in fascicles of 1–3 alternating with calyx lobes; ovary 4–5-locular, 4–5-angled.Capsule 4–5-valved, valves each with a central sharp keel on inner face, spreading horizontally when moist and exposing the seeds in a central mass; seeds many, subreniform, concentrically ridged.

Sandy or gravelly desert, slightly saline canal banks, also in waste places, abandoned fields, ancient dry mud ruins; alt. up to 550 m;

Distribution
Iraq: Common in desert plateau and Lower Mesopotamian regions of Iraq. Egypt, Arabian Peninsula, Palestine, Iran to Pakistan; S Mediterranean region through N Africa to Canary Islands, Spain and Balearic Islands.
