The native range of this subspecies is Canary Islands (Gran Canaria), Ethiopia to S. Africa, Madagascar, Réunion, St. Helena, Ascension, Socotra, Yemen, Medit. to Japan and Tropical Asia. It is a rhizomatous geophyte and grows primarily in the seasonally dry tropical biome.
