Pycnostachys meyeri is a variable species with an extensive distribution. It differs mainly in the degree of pubescence of the leaves, and the calyx lobes, which can either be glabrous or with a few eglandular hairs. The length of the calyx lobes can also vary, but this is not correlated to the length of the calyx tube, which seems to be consistently 4–5 mm long in fruit. The small corolla is also a conservative character. This species shares a similar distribution to P. deflexifolia, although reaching further south, but differs from it due to its petiolate rather than subsessile leaves, its more glabrous corolla and its bracts that are less conspicuously ciliate. The more typical form has a small inflorescence, short calyx lobes (in fruit 4–5 mm), smallish leaves, and occurs across Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, e.g. Verdcourt & Polhill 2972. However, there are also forms with longer hairier calyx lobes (in fruit 8–9 mm e.g. Greenway & Kanuri 13867); longer glabrous calyx lobes (e.g. Bally 8374, Dale 3381), and short hairier calyx lobes (e.g. Mwangulango, Phillipson & Rodgers 506). However, these overlap with the more typical form, vegetatively and in aspects of the inflorescence such as the corolla, therefore all are treated as one species.
