The native range of this species is SW. & Central Mexico. It is a perennial or rhizomatous geophyte and grows primarily in the seasonally dry tropical biome.

Distribution
Semitropical zone of southeast Mexico, in the Nearctic and Neotropical regions (provinces of Chihuahuan Desert, Sierra Madre Oriental, Transmexican Volcanic Belt, Sierra Madre del Sur, Balsas Basin, and Veracruzan; Morrone et al. 2017).
Ecology
Thyrsanthemum longifolium is found growing in “bosques de encino, de pino-encino y de coníferas” (i.e., oak, pine-oak, and juniper forests), rocky slopes, roadside banks, etc. in the “bosque tropical caducifolio” (i.e., subtropical low deciduous woodland), between 1,100 – 1,800 m.
Conservation
Thyrsanthemum longifolium possesses wide EOO (c. 231,951.404 km2) and AOO (c. 780.000 km2). Thus, following the IUCN (2001) recommendations, T. longifolium should be considered Least Concern (LC), due to the lack of any imminent threats.
Phenology
Thyrsanthemum longifolium can be found in flower and fruit from July to September.
