The native range of this subspecies is SE. Kenya to NE. Tanzania and Tropical & Subtropical Asia, Tropical America. It is an annual and grows primarily in the wet tropical biome.

An erect, branched herb up to 1 m tall; leaves 2–9 cm long, the blade rounded- or ovate- angulate in outline, more or less deeply lobed, in larger leaves the lobes narrowed downward forming rounded bays between them

Uses

Use
This species intergrades in many regions, presumably by hybridisation with Urena lobata L., but the latter has not been found in the Cayman Islands. Both species yield a strong fibre that can be used as a substitute for flax.
