The native range of this species is S. Mexico to Tropical America. It is a rhizomatous geophyte and grows primarily in the wet tropical biome. It is used as animal food and a medicine and for food.

Colombian departments: Antioquia, Atlántico, Bolívar, Caquetá, Casanare, Cauca, Chocó, Guaviare, La Guajira, Magdalena, Meta, Nariño, Norte de Santander, Putumayo, Quindío, Valle del Cauca, Vaupés.
