Achenes smooth, velutinous above, compressed to terete and shortly cylindrical, hilum basal or lateral, truncate at apex with an annular rim surrounded by pappus; pappus of several rows of outer barbellate pale to dark bristles and an inner series of short dark scales.
Distribution
Three species in Iraq, the Mediterranean region and W Asia.
Etymology
Crupina (from the Low German krupen, to creep – alluding to the ability of the seed to ‘creep’ forward using its rigid, barbellate pappus; for this reason, mature seeds do not fall from the involucre in dried herbarium material of the genus.)
