General Description
Plant erect on ± pubescent stilt roots, stem often rhizomatous, 15 - 60 cm; Internodes short, 1-1.5 cm. LEAVES: Petiole 2-9.5 cm, sheathed for half or more than 2/3 its length; Sheath very broad, striate longitudinally, almost enclosing in the stem and ending abruptly in 2 more or less long auricles; Blade 12-36 x 4-18 cm, oblanceolate to obovate, assymetric, narrowed towards the base, acute to obtuse-rounded, apex obtuse or shortly acuminate excavated; 7-15 pairs of primary veins arcuate ascending; network of veins and veinlets strongly anastomosing on the lower surface; long translucent glandular lines in the parenchyma, arcuate ascending. INFLORESCENCES solitary or in twos; Peduncle 2-7 cm, becoming pendent in fruit; spathe green or yellowish, slowly decomposing to fibres. 2-4.5 cm; Female flowers pink; Stigma depressed, nipple-like, striate radially; ovary subglobose, bilocular; ovules campylotropous, axillary. INFRUCTESCENCES: Berries orange or red, globose or more ao less lobes, 15-25 mm.
Distribution
Forest zones, from Guinea to Congo; Common in Gabon and Cameroon where this species occurs generally in riparian forest zones (Kribi, Loldorf, Yabassi, Douala, Sangmélima, Abong, Mbang, Bertoua, Batouri, Yokadouma), in shaded, humid understorey or swamps.
