Habitat
Dense humid forest, secondary forest, open places, helophytic species, mesophyll forest.
Diagnostic
C. glandulosa appears to be quite distinct from any species of Culcasia so far described by the remarkable number of linear glands immersed in the tissues of the lamina which may appear as black or pellucid streaks. Morphologically the species is close to C. tenuifolia but its fruits are globose, rather than elongated, and the leaves differ principally in their being oblique and unequal-sided. The leaf-sheaths of C. glandulosa extend well up the petiole and they are rather broad, like C. tenuifolia . This species has characters of very high climbing plants as well as those of the plants which climb only 1 to 5 m in height.
General Description
Climbing species (2-5 m), branching to many levels; Stem about 2 mm diam., internodes 2-8 cm, sometimes forming a pendent stem, anchor roots 1-2 cm long, distributed along the axis. LEAVES: Petiole 4-8 cm, sheath ca. 2/3 length of the petiole; blade elliptic-obovate, base rounded, apex mucronate or apiculate, long acuminate (1.0-2.5 cm), , 12-17 cm long, 4-8 cm wide, lateral veins ca. 9, secretory canals dark, very numerous, 2-3 mm long. INFLORESCENCE: Peduncle 2-5 per article, normally 3; 5-5.5 cm long; Spathe 3-5 cm, spadix 4-5 cm, 6 mm diam., pink-orange; Male zone 2.5-3.5 cm of which 1 cm of sterile flowers, stamens grouped by 4; diam. of a stamen 1mm; Female zone 0.4-1.7 cm; Ovary 2-locular, 3 mm diam., stigma 1.5-2 mm, dark. There is often a space seen between the male zone and the female zone, with some sterile male flowers on the spadix which is very slender at this point. INFRUCTESCENCE: 1-2 seeds per berry, surface of the berry matte, orange, shape globular, 1.5 by 1.0 cm; seeds dark.
