General Description
Small climbing plant up to 1-2 m above ground; Stem very slender and branched, bearing short anchor roots 2-3 cm; Internodes close together, 1-2 cm, occasionally 3 cm, giving a tufted aspect to the foliage. LEAVES: Petiole short, 2-2.5 (-4.5) cm, decurrent on the blade, canaliculate and sheathed halfway or nearly the entire length, sheath spreading into 2 expanded wings; Blade 3.5-10.5 (-12.5) x 0.5-2.5 cm, lanceolate, tapered at the base, curved at the apex, more or less gradually pointed; Primary veins somewhat prominent and joining to other principal veins in an intramarginal vein; Numerous black linear glands on the lower surface of fresh leaves, ± visible in a dry state. INFLORESCENCES terminal, 1-3; Peduncle very short, ca. 1 cm; Spathe ca.1.5 cm, green, then brown; Spadix white, stipe 2-4 cm; Ovary subglobose, bilocular, surmounted by a small circular stigma; Ovules axillary, campylotropous. INFRUCTESCENCES: Berries scarlet-blackberry coloured, subglobose and depressed, tapered at the base, 6-9 mm.
Habitat
Plant of the understorey, sometimes clearing or edges of rivers.
Distribution
Species dispersed in Cameroon, in evergreen forest and semideciduous forest; Rare in Gabon, not found from other areas.
