General Description
LEAVES: Juvenile plants erect, with wide elliptic leaf blades and short internodes; adult plants scandent, with circular leaf blades and long internodes. Internodes in adult plants 3-7 cm long and 1-1.5 cm in diameter, slightly tinged with red, with [roots that adhere/stick] on[/from] the stem[/or stalk], these 0.5-1 cm long, more or less reddish. Petiole 0.8-1.5 cm long and 1-1.5 mm in diameter, reddish, flattened at the top with both margins somewhat raised. Blade 0.7-1 cm long, reddish, ending in a 1-2 mm long tip. Leaf lamina of adult plants circular to kidney-shaped, 2-6 cm long and about as wide as or wider than long; upper side dark olive green and tinged reddish, velvety glossy; under side greenish to reddish. Base heart-shaped; apex ending in a short 1-1.5 mm long and often contorted tip; nervature net-like, 2 or 3 primary side veins either side of a strong mid vein, secondary side veins weaker; with dot-like glands. INFLORESCENCE: Sympodium with 2-3 inflorescences, cataphyll short, 3-5 mm long, slightly reddish. Peduncle ca. 1.5 cm long and 1-1.5 mm in diameter, greenish to reddish. Spathe 1.2-1.5 cm long, tinged pale green to slightly reddish on the inside and outside; ending in a short, reddish tip; open during anthesis, closing again afterwards. Spadix 1-1.3 cm long, stipitate, stalk 3-4 mm long and 1-1.5 mm thick, pale green; female flowers usually only arranged in one circle, rarely in two circles one above the other, sometimes also reduced to one or a few flowers; male section 5-6 mm long and 3-3.5 mm in diameter, yellowish, rounded at the top. Male flowers usually composed of 2, rarely of 3 stamens; stamens truncate, more or less rhomboid (often irregularly shaped from above), ca. 1 mm high and 0.7-1.5 mm in diameter; thecae sit laterally on the thick filament, apically opening with a broad slit. Pollen spherical, 25-30µm in diameter, inaperturate, exine with warts. Ovary flat globose, 1.2-2 mm in diameter, pale green, uni- to bi-locular, with one ovule-attachment per locule; anatropous ovule-attachment, ca. 0.5 mm long, with a short funicle, placentation basal; stigma disciform, sessile, ca. 1 mm in diameter, yellowish, papillate. INFRUCTESCENCE: Berries flat globose to globose, 0.8-1 cm in diameter; seeds globose, ca. 0.6 cm in diameter, testa smooth. Chromosome 2n = 42.
