The native range of this variety is Eritrea to S. Africa, India. It is an annual and grows primarily in the seasonally dry tropical biome.

Morphology General Habit
Loosely tufted, up to 50 cm high, slender, usually straggling and ascending from a decumbent base, much-branched and rooting from the lower nodes

Inflorescence 8.5–17 cm long, linear with short oblong to cuneate densely crowded racemes 1.5–6 mm apart; racemes 0.6–1.6 cm long, at first ascending, eventually reflexing and finally deciduous

Spikelets 1- to 2-flowered, narrowly cuneate, 5–6.5 mm long; glumes coriaceous, asymmetric, overlapping abaxially and obscuring the florets; lemmas narrowly ovate, 1.8–2.4 mm long, appressed-pubescent along the lateral nerves and on the back below.
Distribution
S1, 3 East tropical Africa southwards to South Africa.
Ecology
Altitude range 170–250 m.
Note
Differs from var. retroflexa by the shorter, more densely crowded racemes and the generally 1- or 2-flowered spikelets.
