The native range of this variety is S. Somalia to Kenya. It is an annual and grows primarily in the seasonally dry tropical biome.

Note
Vegetatively very similar to var. urticifolia, but can be distinguished by the larger and deflexed anterior calyx lobe, noted by collectors to be conspicuously white. The corolla is also larger. This is the most common variety in East Africa.
