The native range of this subspecies is S. Tropical Africa to NW. Namibia. It is a shrub or tree and grows primarily in the desert or dry shrubland biome.

- Morphology General Habit
- Deciduous tree, often branched from the base, up to 12 m tall; crown spreading or irregular; bark greyish, flaking off in plates.

- Young parts appressed-pubescent, soon glabrous; branchlets glabrous, bark reddish-brown.

- Leaves up to 12 cm long; petiole 1–3 cm long, rachis 3–6 cm long, sparsely puberulous or glabrous; petiolules 1.5–3 mm long; leaflets 1–9(11), subopposite to alternate, 2.5–5 × 1.5–3.5 cm, ovate to elliptic or oblong-ovate, rounded or obtuse or acute and sometimes emarginate at the apex, rounded or obtuse or cuneate at the base, glabrous on upper surface, minutely appressed-puberulous or glabrous beneath; lateral nerves in 4–6 pairs, these and the reticulation scarcely visible on either surface; stipules 5–8 mm long, linear, caducous.

- Also in S Angola and Namibia.

- In open woodlands and Baikiaea forest, often on Kalahari sands and in rocky places; 40–1200 m.
