Erect annual 50–70 cm tall, with numerous ascending branches, the ultimate flowering branches mostly suppressed to give axillary clusters of flowers and leaves; stem rather densely subappressed pubescent.

Leaves mostly 3-foliolate, uppermost reduced, usually 1-foliolate; leaflets 7–15 × 2–5 mm, oblong-oblanceolate, thinly pilose on both surfaces; petiole 2–4 mm long; stipules 0.

Flowers 4–10 in terminal sessile heads and on suppressed lateral branches below, also a few in the axils; bracts progressively reduced inwards, outer ones foliaceous, the innermost linear; pedicel 1–3 mm long, sometimes with setaceous bracteoles.
