Morphology Reproductive morphology Inflorescences
Inflorescences sessile or with peduncle to 0.6 cm, 3–8-flowered at each of the upper nodes.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Pedicel
Pedicels 3–8 mm long, sparsely to densely pubescent with blackish hairs
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Calyx
Calyx lobes 1.5–2.5 × 0.5–0.8 mm, narrowly triangular to ovate, attenuate, sparsely to densely pilose in upper half of outer face, lower half with shorter reddish hairs
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Corolla
Corolla campanulate, lobed ± to the base, yellow-green or reddish brown outside, paler within and on margins; lobes ovate, 2.5–4 × 1.5–2 mm, acute, weakly replicate, outer surface with white hairs towards the apex, commonly with reddish ones below; inner face glabrous
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Corona
Corona lobes of type A (fig 91.1), green or yellow, sometimes tinged purple on the horns, as tall as or longer than the staminal column; basal part spreading, slightly fleshy, 0.5–0.7 × 1 mm, with square shoulders, apical tooth erect, narrowly triangular, 0.7–1 mm long; inner tooth erect or inflexed over apex of stylar head, about as long as outer tooth
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Androecium Stamens
Staminal column ± 1 mm long; corpusculum reddish brown, subcylindrical, 0.2–0.3 × 0.05–0.1 mm; translator arms slender, terete, becoming contorted to inver pollinia when pollinarium removed from anthers.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Pollinia
Pollinia attached subterminally to the translator arms, 0.4–0.6 × 0.2 mm, subcylindrical, not compressed and with a clearly defined apical germination zone
Morphology Reproductive morphology Fruits
Follicles not seen.
Ecology
Broken turf among rocks in montane grassland; 2400–2700 m
Note
Tanzanian material of this species has a more pronounced indumentum than collections from Malawi. The corona lobe teeth are shorter also, not overtopping the head of the staminal column. Note that fruiting material of Richards 18524 belongs to Asclepias alpestris.
