The native range of this variety is NW. Kenya. It is an annual and grows primarily in the seasonally dry tropical biome.

Type: Type: Kenya, Turkana, Ekidir, Mathew & Gwynne 6774 (K, holo.; not found)
Morphology General: Differing from var trabeculata in its smaller glumes 1.2–1.5 mm long
Ecology: Seasonal swamp on mud under Acacia seyal; 600 m
Note: Although in Haines & Lye fig. 234 is captioned var. microglumis it is clearly stated that the habit drawing was drawn from Welwitsch 6982, one of the syntypes of typical B. trabeculata.
