The native range of this subspecies is S. Iberian Peninsula, Baleares, Morocco. It is a tuberous geophyte and grows primarily in the subtropical biome.

Distribution

The distribution is western Mediterranean and is in Europe limited to Mallorca and the southwestern part of the Iberian peninsula (Estremadura, Ribatejo, Algarve and Andalusia). [Bal, Por, Spa; Mor].

General Description

Plant slender, 10-35(-50) cm tall with (1-)3-8 inclined-spreading flowers in a relatively lax (to dense) spike. Sepals 10-17 × 6-8 mm; the lateral ones 1.5-2.5 times as long as wide, broadest below, at or above the middle. Petals 7-12 × 2-3.5 mm. Lip with dark grey to blackish brown ground colour, opposite the hind edge of the side lobes abruptly downcurved, 10-19 × 9-14 mm; mid-lobe and side lobes long-hairy; mirror usually not marbled, reddish brown (to cream or greenish), pale at the base, the w-shaped band in front sharply delimited and (in newly opened flowers) white to light grey (rarely light bluish).
