Robust, erect, semi-woody shrub, 0.9–5 m tall, sparsely branched

Leaves lanceolate to narrowly lanceolate (or ovate) mostly more than 50 mm long, usually velvety beneath, rarely tomentose to almost smooth
Ecology
Margins of montane forest, associated bushland and grassland, also in ericaceous and bamboo zones, extending down to Brachystegia woodland particularly along streams, usually on well-drained volcanic soils; (50–)600–3700 m
Conservation
Least concern; widely distributed in diverse habitats
Note
Further synonyms from southern Africa are given by Iwarsson & Harvey, loc. cit. (2003). Var. schinzii, which differs from var. ocymifolia by its narrowly spathulate to oblanceolate or obovate leaves, occurs in Botswana, Zimbabwe and South Africa.
