Perennial herb with annual shoots from a woody rootstock; stems 30–75 cm (?–1.2 m) high, pubescent.

Leaves sessile, (ob-)lanceolate, those on the lower part of the stem large, those on the distal half of the stem rapidly changing to short and more narrow, 4–20 cm long, 0.4–6 cm wide, base clasping, margins entire, apex abruptly mucronate, subglabrous with some hairs on the margins, with impressed glands.
