Shrub or tree 1.5–5 m. tall; stems pubescent when very young, soon glabrous, often darker brown or grey than in V. strickeri and sometimes more terete.

Leaflets 3, elliptic, ovate, obovate or ± round, 1–9 cm. long, 0.6–4 cm. wide, acute or acuminate at the apex, cuneate at the base, discolorous, crenate towards the apex, pubescent and glandular on both surfaces, very slightly scabrid and ± bullate above; petiole 0.4–2 cm. long; petiolules obsolete or central one up to 8 mm. long.

Inflorescences 2.5–5 cm. long, extending to 7 cm. in fruit, reduced so that side-branches appear as fascicles with ± 5 flowers, the pedicels arising ± directly from main axis, the secondary axes ± suppressed; pedicels 1–1.5 mm. long but fruit-stalks 3–6.5 mm. long; bracts oblong to linear, 3–5 mm. long, 0.3–1 mm. wide.
