The native range of this variety is S. Tropical Africa to N. Namibia. It is an annual and grows primarily in the desert or dry shrubland biome.

Note
Cup shaped and elongated scales in varying density found on all parts of the plant.
Ecology
In low rainfall areas, at riversides and in dry pans, in sandy soil, also in disturbed ground; 250–900 m.
