Tufted annual/short-lived perennial, not rooting from the nodes; stems to 17 cm long, readily disarticulating at nodes

Involucral leaves smaller than stem leaves Leaves opposite, varying from small ovate, rather scale-like, to linear, up to 20–30 x 1.5–2 mm; nodes with dense whorl of stiff hairs 8–10 mm long, lower nodes with a few longer, slightly brownish scales to 20 mm long
