Note
This species can be distinguished from all others in the genus by its clustered inflorescences that are branched at the base only. After anthesis, the perianth becomes black and tightly encloses the fruit, a feature shared with the closely related A. aspera, A. diffusa, and A. marginata. The features of the synonymised Tandonia cardifolia fall well within the variation of A. brachystachys. Moquin-Tandon (1849b) made the description of Tandonia brachystachys from several specimens, of which the one in P-Moq. was selected as lectotype by Sperling (1995).
Type
Colombia, Bogotá, Goudot (lectotype P-Moq., designated by Sperling 1995: 3, photo GB!).
