Morphology General Habit
Shrubby herb or shrub to 1.5 m; young branches ± 4-angled, green, antrorsely sericeous to tomentellous, soon glabrescent, older branches brownish.

Mature leaves subglabrous to puberulous or sericeous, densest on midrib and large veins; petiole to 1.2 cm long; lamina elliptic or narrowly so, largest 8.5–15(20) × 2.5–4(5) cm; apex subacuminate to obtuse, base attenuate, decurrent.

Flowers solitary, subsessile, in (2)3–7.5(10) cm long dorsiventral racemoid terminal cymes, or on small axillary branches, or some axillary; peduncle absent or 0.3–1 cm long in axillary cymes, with a single pair of sterile bracts; fertile bracts imbricate, green with broad paler hyaline margin, ovate, (1.2)1.6–2.6 × (0.5)0.8–1.5 cm, subglabrous to sericeous along veins, apex acute or subacute, base truncate or cuneate; bracteoles narrowly triangular, 1–3 mm long.

Calyx green with broad paler hyaline margins, 7–11 mm long, fused to ± middle but sometimes to within 2–3 mm of apex; sparsely puberulous or sericeous, densest along broad midrib, ciliate; lobes triangular, acute.

Corolla salmon to brick red, 4.9–5.8 cm long, glabrous or sparsely puberulous; tube 1.9–2.5 cm long, c.3 mm wide; upper lip 3–3.3 cm long, lower lip 2.5–3.1 cm long, with 3 minute lobes 1–2 mm long.

Distribution
Also in South Africa (Limpopo, Mpumulanga).
Ecology
In coastal thicket and bushland; c.100 m.
Conservation
Conservation notes: Fairly widespread but local in the Flora area; possibly Near Threatened.
