The native range of this subspecies is Uganda to S. Tropical Africa. It is a climbing tuberous geophyte and grows primarily in the seasonally dry tropical biome.

Conservation notes Widespread taxon; not threatened.
Distribution
Some intermediate populations between the two subspecies are found in Mozambique and Malawi. Caprivi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique. Also in S Congo, W Tanzania and Uganda.

Uses

Use
The tubers are said to be a famine food by the Lozi in Zambia. Bulbils of the West/ Central African subspecies are edible.
